First, Claude itself has a free plan: Anthropic's pricing page lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and memory at $0, with usage limits. If you want a free assistant without plan caps that keeps your chats on your own machine, run open models locally with Ollama (MIT) and a chat interface like Open WebUI or the Jan desktop app (Apache-2.0). The catch: open models you can run at home are smaller than Claude's models, so expect weaker answers on hard reasoning and coding, and speed depends on your RAM and GPU.

Fastest path: Jan

  1. Download Jan for Windows, macOS or Linux from jan.ai or the Jan GitHub releases (v0.8.7 was published October 20, 2026).
  2. Open the model hub and download a model that fits your RAM.
  3. Start a chat. It runs offline once the model is downloaded.

More features: Ollama + Open WebUI

  1. Install Ollama. On Linux: curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh; Mac and Windows have installers.
  2. Pull and test a model, for example ollama run gemma4 (the README's example).
  3. Install Open WebUI with pip install open-webui or Docker: docker run -d -p 3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main.
  4. Open http://localhost:3000, create the admin account and pick your Ollama model.

The catches

When Claude is still worth paying for

If you rely on Claude's strongest models for long coding sessions, research or big documents, Pro or Max gives you more of them, and the Free plan is the cheapest way to keep Claude itself. A local setup wins when you want private, uncapped everyday chat at no cost.

FAQ

How much does Claude cost?

Claude's pricing page (checked 2026-10-27) lists Free at $0, Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 monthly, and Max from $100 a month for 5x or 20x Pro's usage. Team standard seats are $20 a seat a month annually or $25 monthly. Prices exclude tax and usage limits apply on every plan.

What do you get on Claude's free plan?

Per the pricing page: chat on web, iOS, Android and desktop, web search, Artifacts, file creation with code execution, memory, connectors, voice mode and up to 5 Projects, with Sonnet and Haiku models. Pro adds Opus, Claude Code, Research and more usage. Anthropic's Help Center says Pro limits reset every five hours with a weekly cap, and Free has less usage per session.

Is a local model as good as Claude?

No, not in general. Models small enough for a home computer trail the large hosted models on hard reasoning and long coding tasks. They're fine for drafting, summarizing and everyday questions, and they stay private and uncapped.

Ollama + Open WebUI or Jan?

Jan is one desktop app: download, pick a model, chat. Ollama is the engine, and Open WebUI adds a ChatGPT-style web interface you run with Docker or pip, with more features like multiple users. Our Ollama vs Jan guide compares them.

What hardware do I need?

Jan's README suggests 8 GB of RAM for 3B models, 16 GB for 7B and 32 GB for 13B on a Mac, and a GPU on Windows. A graphics card with more memory runs bigger models faster.

Can I still use Claude models through these apps?

Yes, but not for free. Jan lists Anthropic as a cloud provider and Open WebUI works with OpenAI-compatible APIs; either way you pay the API provider for usage.
