The closest free alternative to Notion AI is AppFlowy, an open-source (AGPL-3.0) workspace for docs, wikis and databases, paired with its Local AI feature. Install Ollama on your computer, switch on Local AI in AppFlowy's settings, and AI chat, summarize, improve writing and continue writing run on a model on your own machine. AppFlowy's pricing page lists Local AI on the free Personal plan. The catch: AppFlowy's own README says it doesn't claim to beat Notion on features or design, cloud AI and meeting notes are only a limited trial on free, and local models need RAM (AppFlowy suggests 8 GB for 7B models).

Set it up in 5 steps
- Download AppFlowy for your system from appflowy.com or the AppFlowy releases (0.14.11 was published October 26, 2026).
- Install Ollama and check it with
ollama --version. - Pull AppFlowy's default models:
ollama pull gemma3:4bandollama run hf.co/Qwen/Qwen3-Embedding-4B-GGUF:Q4_K_M. - Open AppFlowy desktop ▸ Settings and toggle Local AI on, with Ollama running. Initializing can take seconds or minutes depending on your machine.
- Open a page and use the AI writers, or open AI Chat. To try another model, pull it with Ollama and reopen Settings to pick it.
The catches
- Not Notion: AppFlowy's README says it doesn't claim to outperform Notion in functionality and design, at least for now.
- Smaller AI feature set: no agent that edits your whole workspace, no connected-app search and no local image generation.
- Your hardware: a small local model writes weaker drafts than the large hosted models behind Notion AI.
- Free cloud limits: 100 MB storage and 7 MB uploads if you sync through AppFlowy Cloud.
When Notion AI is still worth paying for
If your team already lives in Notion and wants an agent that works across the workspace, meeting notes and search across Slack or Google Drive, Notion's Business plan does that. AppFlowy with Local AI wins when you want a free notes-and-databases app with AI writing help that keeps your pages on your own machine.

How much does Notion AI cost?
Notion's pricing page (checked 2026-10-27) lists Free at $0, Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member a month, with Enterprise custom. Its Help Center says Notion AI is available on Business and Enterprise, while Free and Plus users get a limited number of complimentary AI responses to try it. Custom Agents use Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 a month after a free trial.
Is AppFlowy really free?
The app is open source under AGPL-3.0 and the Personal plan is $0. Per AppFlowy's pricing page, Personal includes Local AI but caps cloud storage at 100 MB, file uploads at 7 MB and gives only a limited trial of cloud AI responses, AI meeting notes and AI transcripts. Pro is $12 per member a month billed annually or $16 monthly.
What can AppFlowy's Local AI do?
AppFlowy's guide and announcement list AI Chat, chat with local files and in-document AI writers: ask AI, summarize, fix spelling and grammar, continue writing, improve writing, explain, make longer and make shorter. Text-to-image isn't available in Local AI.
Does my data leave my computer?
Not for Local AI. AppFlowy's guide says it runs AI features on your device so your data isn't sent to AI service providers. If you turn on an online model instead, that provider gets your prompts. Syncing workspaces through AppFlowy Cloud is a separate choice from the AI.
What hardware do I need?
AppFlowy's guide lists macOS on Apple M1 or newer, Windows 10 or newer, or Linux, and suggests at least 8 GB of RAM for 7B models, 16 GB for 13B and 32 GB for 33B. Its default local models include gemma3:4b and a Qwen3 embedding model pulled through Ollama.
Can I bring my Notion pages over?
AppFlowy is built as a Notion-style workspace, but we haven't tested an import, so check AppFlowy's docs for current import options before you move a large workspace.
