Free alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro
Home › Guides · Last checked 2026-10-29 · Facts verified from each project's docs unless marked tested
The closest free alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro (Adobe's site now calls it Adobe Premiere) is Kdenlive, a free and open-source video editor from KDE (GPL-3.0) that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. It covers the core of a Premiere edit: a non-linear timeline with multicam and 3-point editing, nested sequences, keyframed effects, LUTs with color scopes and automatic subtitles made on your own computer with Whisper or VOSK. Premiere costs US$22.99/mo on the annual plan. The catch: Kdenlive has none of Adobe's generative AI (Generative Extend, Firefly credits), no cloud storage or Frame.io review, and you install the speech models yourself before auto-captions work.

Get started free in 5 steps
- Download Kdenlive 26.08.2 from kdenlive.org/download: the Windows installer, the Linux AppImage or Flatpak, or the macOS build for Apple Silicon or Intel.
- Import your footage into the Project Bin. If playback stutters on an older laptop, turn on proxy clips.
- Cut on the timeline, then add effects, transitions and keyframes. Use LUTs and the scopes for color.
- For captions, open Settings, Configure Kdenlive, Speech to Text, pick Whisper or VOSK and install a model for your language.
- Add a subtitle track with the Edit Subtitle Tool, click Speech recognition, choose the timeline zone and click Process.
The catches
- No generative AI: nothing like Generative Extend or Firefly, so missing frames and ambient sound stay a manual job.
- Setup for speech: auto-subtitles work only after you install a Whisper or VOSK model.
- No cloud review: there's no built-in Frame.io-style review, so you share exports by hand.
- Smaller team: a small, mostly volunteer team builds it, so the polish and support of a paid Adobe product isn't there.
When Premiere is still worth paying for
If you work with clients who send Premiere projects, rely on Frame.io review or want generative fixes and AI clip search, the US$22.99 a month buys that. Kdenlive wins when you edit your own YouTube videos, tutorials or family footage and want a full timeline editor with local auto-captions for $0.

FAQ
How much does Adobe Premiere cost?
Adobe's plans page (checked 2026-10-29) lists Premiere as a single app at US$22.99 a month on the annual plan billed monthly for individuals, with Premiere on desktop and mobile, the Adobe Express Premium plan, 100GB of cloud storage and 25 monthly generative credits. Business licenses are US$37.99 a month each. Creative Cloud Pro, with 20+ apps, is regularly US$69.99 a month, with a first-3-months discount for new subscribers.
Is there a free version of Premiere?
Not a permanent one. Adobe's FAQ says you can download a seven-day free trial, which is the full version of the app. After that you need a paid plan.
Is Kdenlive really free?
Yes. Kdenlive's site calls it a free and open-source video editor, and its source code is licensed GPL-3.0. There's no paid tier. It's built by a small, mostly volunteer team in the KDE community and asks users for donations.
Can Kdenlive make subtitles automatically?
Yes. Its manual describes automatic subtitles with two local speech engines, VOSK and Whisper. With Whisper you can let it detect the language, set the maximum characters per line and translate to English, and an optional SeamlessM4T setting translates between other languages. You install the speech models first under Settings, Configure Kdenlive, Speech to Text.
Can I edit video by text in Kdenlive like Premiere's Text-Based Editing?
Partly. Kdenlive's Speech Editor transcribes a clip from the Project Bin and lets you add clips to the timeline from the transcript, which the manual suggests for interviews. Premiere's Text-Based Editing transcribes on import and builds a rough cut from copied and pasted text, so it's the more polished version of the idea.
Which systems does Kdenlive run on?
The download page (checked 2026-10-29) lists version 26.08.2 for Windows 10 or newer (installer or standalone), Linux (AppImage or Flatpak on Flathub) and macOS 13 Ventura or newer on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
