Free alternative to Topaz Gigapixel

The closest free alternative to Topaz Gigapixel is Upscayl, an open-source desktop AI image upscaler for Windows, macOS and Linux (AGPL-3.0). It runs Real-ESRGAN-style models on your own GPU and can batch-upscale a folder. The catch: it needs a Vulkan-compatible GPU, most integrated graphics and CPUs won't work, and it can't fix blurry or out-of-focus photos.

What Upscayl does
Upscayl enlarges and enhances low-resolution images with AI models. Its FAQ says it uses Real-ESRGAN and Vulkan, and its backend upscayl-ncnn is open source under AGPLv3. It ships several models and you can add custom models. The desktop app also offers Batch Upscayl and Double Upscayl, per upscayl.org.
Install
- Windows 10+: download the .exe from the Upscayl releases page. Expect a SmartScreen warning on first run.
- macOS 12+: the .dmg, the Mac App Store or
brew install --cask upscayl. - Linux: AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, DEB, RPM or the AUR.
The catches
- GPU required: a Vulkan-compatible graphics card. Many laptops with only integrated graphics are out.
- No miracles on blur: it adds detail to small or pixelated images, not to out-of-focus ones.
- Models vary: results depend on the model you pick, so try two on the same image.
When Topaz is still worth paying for
If you have no usable GPU, or you need Topaz's other photo and video tools in one subscription, the paid route saves setup. Free here means you trade money for your own hardware.

FAQ
Is Upscayl really free?
The desktop app is free and open source under AGPL-3.0 (per its GitHub repo). Upscayl Cloud is a separate hosted product with its own pricing; this page covers the free desktop app only.
Do I need a GPU?
Yes. The README says you need a Vulkan-compatible GPU and that Upscayl won't work with most integrated GPUs or CPUs.
Can Upscayl fix a blurry photo?
No. Its FAQ says it enhances low-resolution and pixelated images but can't de-blur or fix focus.
Can I upscale many images at once?
Yes. The app has a Batch Upscayl mode, and there's a command-line backend called upscayl-ncnn.
Can I use upscaled images commercially?
The app's AGPL-3.0 license covers the software, not your images. Each upscaling model has its own terms, so check the model's source before client work.
