The closest free alternative to Character.AI's c.ai+ is SillyTavern, a free and open-source (AGPL-3.0) chat interface you install on your own computer. It's built around character cards: you write your own or download community cards, then chat one-on-one or in group chats, with lorebooks, personas and no ads. c.ai+ costs $94.99 a year on the yearly plan. The catch: SillyTavern is only an interface. The catches
- It's only an interface: without a model it can't chat, and the SillyTavern team doesn't support installing local model servers.
- Local models are weaker: the docs say most local models aren't as powerful as cloud LLMs, and each is a 5 to 50GB download.
- Free cloud is slow and public: AI Horde's guest queue can mean long waits, and volunteer workers could see your prompts.
