Ollama vs LM Studio
Home › Guides · Last checked 2026-10-28 · Facts verified from each project's docs unless marked tested
Both are free and run open models on your own computer. Ollama is an MIT-licensed engine with a local API that other apps plug into. LM Studio is a polished desktop app for finding, downloading and chatting with models. Pick LM Studio if you want to browse and chat in a window. Pick Ollama if you want an open-source engine that powers other tools or runs on a server. The catch with LM Studio is that the app is closed source. The catch with Ollama is that its desktop chat app doesn't exist on Linux.
| Ollama | LM Studio | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free to run models locally. Optional paid cloud models and plans | Free app (home and work). Optional paid cloud plans |
| License | MIT, open source | Proprietary app terms. Free for personal and internal business use, but not for resale or SaaS. Its lms CLI is MIT |
| macOS | macOS 14+. Apple Silicon (CPU + GPU); Intel Macs CPU only | macOS 14+. Apple Silicon only; Intel Macs not supported |
| Windows | Windows 10 22H2+. NVIDIA and AMD GPU support | x64 (needs AVX2) and ARM (Snapdragon X Elite) |
| Linux | Yes (install script or manual package; Docker image) | Yes, x64 and ARM64 AppImage (Ubuntu 20.04+) |
| GUI vs CLI | CLI and local API first. Chat app on macOS and Windows | GUI first: model search, chat, chat with documents, presets, MCP. lms CLI and a headless daemon (llmster) too |
| Model formats | Ollama library models. Import GGUF or Safetensors with a Modelfile | GGUF (llama.cpp) and MLX on Apple Silicon. Downloads from Hugging Face in-app; lms import for GGUF files |
| Local API | Native API on localhost:11434. OpenAI-compatible at /v1 (a subset). Anthropic-compatible too | Server on localhost:1234. OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions, /v1/responses, /v1/embeddings, /v1/models, /v1/completions. Anthropic-compatible too |
| Best for | Powering other apps (Continue, Open WebUI, coding agents), servers and anyone who needs open source | Beginners and Mac users who want to browse, test and chat with models in one window |
Which should you pick?
Pick LM Studio if you'd rather click than type. You get a search box for Hugging Face models, a chat window, document chat and a server toggle in one app. That costs you openness. The app is closed source, and its terms let you use it for personal and internal business work but not resell it or run it as a hosted service.
Pick Ollama if other software needs a model. It's MIT-licensed, it runs headless on Linux servers and tools like Continue and Open WebUI use it as a backend. That costs you comfort on Linux and with your own model files: Linux has no chat app, and importing a GGUF or Safetensors file means writing a Modelfile.
Think of Ollama as a car engine you can drop into any chassis and LM Studio as a finished car with the dashboard already wired. If you're on an Intel Mac, the choice is made for you: LM Studio doesn't support it, and Ollama runs there on CPU only.
You don't have to pick one forever. Both serve an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so most tools that accept a custom base URL work with either. Only the port changes (11434 vs 1234).

FAQ
Is LM Studio free for commercial use?
LM Studio has been free at work since July 8, 2025, with no form or separate license needed. Its terms grant use for personal and internal business purposes. They forbid reselling the app or offering it as a hosted service. Each model has its own license, so check the model card too.
Is Ollama open source?
Yes. Ollama is MIT-licensed on GitHub. Running models on your own hardware is free and unlimited. Ollama also sells optional cloud models and plans, which need an account and usage credits.
Ollama vs LM Studio: which is faster?
Neither project publishes a head-to-head benchmark. Speed depends mostly on your GPU or Mac memory, the model size and the quantization. For a fair test, run the same model at the same quantization in both and compare tokens per second on your own machine.
Does Ollama or LM Studio work on Mac and Windows?
Both support macOS 14 or newer, Windows and Linux. LM Studio needs an Apple Silicon Mac; Intel Macs aren't supported. Ollama runs on Intel Macs, but on CPU only. On Windows, LM Studio needs an AVX2 CPU on x64 or a Snapdragon X Elite on ARM.
Can I use LM Studio or Ollama with apps built for the OpenAI API?
Yes. Both run a local server with OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Point the app's base URL at http://localhost:11434/v1 for Ollama or http://localhost:1234/v1 for LM Studio. Ollama supports a subset of the OpenAI API, so check that the endpoint your app needs is listed.
