Free alternatives to ElevenLabs

The closest free alternative to ElevenLabs is Chatterbox, an open text-to-speech model with zero-shot voice cloning. The code is MIT-licensed and it runs on your own machine. The catch: every output carries an imperceptible PerTh watermark and the model-weight terms are unverified.

Chatterbox: what we tested
We ran Chatterbox to make a voice sample for a FreeAISwap YouTube script in October 2026. That's the only use we've tested. Everything else on this page is verified from the project docs, not from our own runs.
The catches
- Watermark: every file carries a PerTh watermark.
- Your hardware: it runs on your own CPU or GPU, so speed depends on your machine.
- License gap: the code is MIT, but we haven't confirmed the model-weight terms.
When ElevenLabs is still worth paying for
If you need a hosted service with no setup, or you can't run models on your own machine, a paid plan is the simpler path. Free here means you trade money for setup time and hardware.

FAQ
Is there a truly free and unlimited ElevenLabs alternative?
Only if you run it yourself. Chatterbox has no usage cap because it runs on your own computer, so the limit is your hardware and time. Hosted services with free plans always cap usage somewhere.
Can Chatterbox clone my voice?
Yes. Chatterbox supports zero-shot voice cloning from a short reference clip, per its GitHub page. We used it for a voice sample for our YouTube script in October 2026.
Does Chatterbox add a watermark?
Yes. Every output carries an imperceptible PerTh watermark, per the project. You won't hear it, but detection tools can find it.
Can I use Chatterbox audio commercially?
The code is MIT-licensed. We have not verified the license terms for the model weights, so check the model card before commercial use.
Is ElevenLabs free for commercial use?
Plans and commercial-use rights change. Check ElevenLabs' own pricing page before relying on any plan.
