The free swaps for Murf-style narration are Piper, Kokoro and Chatterbox. Piper is fast offline TTS that runs on a CPU or even a Raspberry Pi (GPL-3.0). Kokoro is a light open-weight model (82M parameters) whose v1.0 has 8 languages and 54 voices, with Apache-licensed weights. Chatterbox adds zero-shot voice cloning (MIT code). The catch: all three run on your own machine, and only Chatterbox clones voices.

FAQ

Which free TTS can clone my voice?

Of these three, only Chatterbox. Piper has no voice cloning, and Kokoro's model card offers preset voices only.

Can I use Kokoro voices commercially?

Kokoro's weights are Apache-licensed and it's used in commercial APIs, per its model card. Check the card for current terms before you publish.

What's the lightest option for an old laptop?

Piper. It runs on CPU and on a Raspberry Pi. Each Piper voice has its own license, so check the voice you pick.

Have you tested these?

We used Chatterbox for a voice sample for our YouTube script in October 2026. We have not tested Piper or Kokoro; their details here come from their docs.
