Free alternative to LALAL.AI
Home › Guides · Last checked 2026-10-22 · Facts verified from each project's docs unless marked tested
The closest free alternative to LALAL.AI is Ultimate Vocal Remover (UVR), a free MIT-licensed desktop app that separates vocals from instrumentals with AI models, including Demucs v4. It runs on your own Windows, macOS or Linux computer, so there's no minute cap and you keep the files. The catch: the last release (v5.6) is from September 2023, it's a large install, and its README names an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB as the minimum for GPU conversions.

Split a song in 4 steps
- Download the installer for your system from the UVR v5.6 release: a Windows setup .exe (install it to the C: drive, per the README) or a .dmg for Apple Silicon or Intel Macs. The bundles include Python, PyTorch and the other dependencies.
- On a Mac, if it won't open, the README gives Terminal steps to get past Apple's app security.
- Add your audio file and choose a process method: UVR includes VR Architecture, MDX-Net and Demucs models.
- Click Start Processing. Non-WAV files need FFmpeg; the README's manual install steps show where to put it.
Linux has no bundle: the README walks through cloning the repo, installing ffmpeg, python3-pip and python3-tk, then running python UVR.py inside a virtual environment.
Tips
- If you hit a memory allocation error, lower the Segment or Window size, as the README suggests.
- On AMD Radeon or Intel Arc cards on Windows, try the DirectML build linked in the README. AMD support is still limited.
- Clean up the separated vocal with our free Adobe Enhance Speech alternative if there's leftover noise.
The catches
- Install size: it ships its own Python, PyTorch and dependencies.
- Speed: on a laptop CPU a single song can take a while.
- Age: v5.6 dates from 2023, and Windows 7, Pentium and Celeron systems aren't guaranteed to work.
When LALAL.AI is still worth paying for
If you need stems on a phone or a work machine where you can't install software, or you want a VST plugin or an API, LALAL.AI's paid plans cover that. UVR wins when you split songs often, want unlimited runs for free or don't want to upload unreleased tracks.

FAQ
What does LALAL.AI's free plan include?
Its pricing page (checked 2026-10-22) lists the Starter plan as always free with 10 minutes in the Relaxed Queue and a 200MB upload limit per file. The same table shows no result downloads and no batch processing on Starter. Paid Lite starts at $7.50 a month billed annually ($90 a year).
Is Ultimate Vocal Remover really free?
Yes. The README says the GUI code is MIT-licensed and the project is 100% open source and free for anyone to use and modify. It asks app developers who reuse its models to credit UVR.
Do I need a GPU?
No, but it helps a lot. The README says conversion time depends heavily on your hardware and the models are computationally intensive. It lists a GTX 1060 6GB as the minimum for GPU conversions and recommends NVIDIA GPUs with at least 8GB of VRAM. Apple Silicon Macs get GPU (MPS) acceleration for Demucs v4 and MDX-Net models.
Can it split drums, bass and other stems?
Yes, through the Demucs v4 4-stem models bundled with it. The README says UVR's own team trained every included model except the Demucs v3 and v4 4-stem models.
Is UVR still maintained?
The latest tagged release is v5.6 from September 2023. On October 6, 2026 the developer posted that a new release is coming within six weeks, moving the app to a new PySide interface with newer model support. Until it ships, v5.6 is what you can download.
Can I use it on songs I don't own?
Separating a track doesn't give you rights to it. Use stems for practice, remixes you have permission for or your own recordings.
